As a 'spin-off' from one of our projects, a 'custom-build' signal beacon was developed for
the customer. This customer was less satisfied about the signal beacons that were available
on the market. Demands for the design where:
- Seamless integration in the machine design- and looks.
- Fully visible from any position around the machine.
- A high degree of noticability.
- Configurable according the demands of the particular machine.
The designed signal beacon consists of a number of polycarbonate rings, with a diffuse grinded
facet-edge. Except rings, all other forms or shapes are possible as well. The facet-edge will
will enlarge the illuminated surface of the ring.
A led-array is mounted on the inside of the ring. The light from the leds will travel through the
polycarbonate and light up the diffuse grinded edge of the ring.
The led-light intensity is controlled by an embedded microprocessor. This way it is possible
to implement certain illumination-patterns.
One of these patterns is the 'attention'-wave.
The wave is intended to get operator-focus on the fact that the signal is 'active'.
Every 30 seconds a wave will 'travel' over the edge of the ring. Machine-operators
will have their attention caught by the beacon, even if it is on the side of their
'field of view'.
If multiple rings are configured with the 'attention'-wave, the waves are synchronized.
The signal-beacon can be equipped with an acoustic signal.
